Avoid Further Late Fees and Register Your Dog or Cat Today!

Every year beginning in January, every municipality in the State of Vermont begins the process of registering all dogs residing in their town or city.  This is the result of laws passed by the State of Vermont (20 V.S.A §3581) regarding registration of dogs and the City Council expanded it in 1998 to include cats after being approached by citizens in the city.  Any dog or cat which is 6 months of age or older must be registered by the city.  This process needs to be completed by April 1^st to avoid any additional late fees as established by the City Council in the chart below. Please note that these

Late fees increase another $15.00 after May 1^st. To avoid these additional fees, please complete your registration with updated rabies certification today!  We realize that this may have either been an oversight, not being familiar with the laws of the State, or a misunderstanding.  However, the City Clerk by state law must report to the City Council, before May 30^th, a warrant listing all unlicensed dogs and cats per (20 V.S.A. § 3590).  In the past the Council has authorized the police department to begin contacting the owners of the dogs and cats which are on the warrant.  Please help us keep your name off this list by registering your dog or cat or notifying the clerk’s office if you no longer have your cat or dog or tell us if you moved.

The ways to register your pet are by:

1. coming into the Clerk’s office with the current rabies certificate(s) and the appropriate fee(s).
2. dropping off your payment in our night drop box outside the front doors of city hall.
3. mailing the registration form found on our website with the current rabies certificate, and the appropriate fee to the City Clerk’s Office at 180 Market St. to be received prior to May 1^st.
4. Log on to xpress-pay.com. Select Vermont then select South Burlington then choose “Dog/Cat Fees New” ** Please be aware that there will automatically be a 2.8% surcharge plus a site visit for the processing of the card at check out.
